The origins of Rutherford and Company go back to the middle of the 18th century when the family acquired a tavern just off the High Street in Edinburgh. History tells us that.

'Kindly Mrs Rutherford's tavern in Craig's Close was favoured by the merchants who congregated at the Mercat Cross to discuss business'. Amongst her regulars was Robert Burns, with whom the family has some intriguing connections.

Rutherford & Company was established in Edinburgh in 1834 as shippers of the finest wines and ports and producers of exceptionally smooth whiskies and for many years was one of the principal merchants in that city. Since 1969 the company has specialised in the production of Traditional Ceramic Whisky Flagons and today we offer an unrivalled and comprehensive range of Ceramic Decanters and Miniatures containing some of the most interesting and unusual of whiskies. This combination of Fine Old Whiskies and Handcrafted Flagons of traditional design is unbeatable and today Rutherford’s markets have stretched far from the narrow streets of Old Edinburgh to the shores of the Americas and the Orient.

Rutherford & Company continues to manufacture its own ceramics and produce its own whiskies and remains under family control.

What we do.

Rutherford’s produce an extensive range of over thirty different ceramics decanters from 5cl to 70cl capacity, each available in a number of different colours and decorated with a wide variety of images from our huge selection.

Sport, birds and wildlife, vintage vehicles, castles, sailing ships, whatever your interest we are likely to have an image appropriate to your needs! Some smaller items are dedicated whisky ceramics but many others are available without any whisky content, for you to fill yourself or simple to use as a decoration. We can permanently inscribe a decanter to mark a wedding, christening, retirement or other special occasion and reproduce your photograph of a special person or place and apply it permanently to most of our shapes. We can produce a single, one off- piece or a thousand of them, or any quantity in between. We can produce china mugs to commemorate your special event, whether business or personal or unique wedding favours that will be treasured by your family and friends. Rutherford’s Ceramics should last for many generations and become family heirlooms.

Our Whiskies.

Rutherford’s has been creating whiskies of the very finest quality for almost 175 years! Carefully selected single malts are vatted together to produce outstanding Blended Malts or married to grains to produce our choice Blended Scotch Whiskies. Pride of place in our cellar must go to our exclusive ‘100 Malts’, a mélange of over 100 different single malts painstakingly vatted together to create the whisky that we use in many of our commemorative Limited Editions. Here at Rutherford’s we are proud of our whiskies and are confident that our 172 years of experience enables us to produce whiskies that are the equal on any others. But we recognize that many people will have their favourite Scotch and this is particularly important when it comes to a Scotch for a special occasion. Now we are able to offer any single malt or proprietary blended whisky that can be sourced filled into the decanter of your choice, whether personalized or not.
